When
Anne Stevens, a lovely, forty-some widow living on the tiny island of
St. Cecilia in the southern Grenadines, does not show up to meet
guests flying in from the states, her housekeeper, Lucy, and her old
friends the Pearsons are truly concerned. Anne has lunched with the
Pearsons. They know she planned on a quick stop at Tolly Hill to be
certain the cottage was ready for the Thompson's before she changed
cars in town and left for the airport. Guadaloupe and Payter, linemen
working on power poles across the valley, are the last to see her
little red sports car speeding down the mountain toward Tolly Hill.
Delayed by a blistering thunderstorm, it is they who find her Fiat in
a ravine behind the house and on the path a gold hoop earring with a
piece of soft flesh still attached.
