In order to arrive at a mutually acceptable rate, it will be necessary
for me to review a representative sample of the material to be
indexed. There are a number of factors that affect establishing a
rate: type of material, page size and format, density of the material
with regard to the number of index entries per page, the number of
indexable illustrations, tables or maps, the intended audience, depth
of indexing (subheadings), the need for multiple indexes (name,
author, subject or taxonomy), time constraints and delivery options
requiring special attention.
Additionally, index specifications, including the index style and
delivery options (electronic file formats, email, floppy disk, CD
and/or hard copies) need to be established as they are central to the
physical construction and delivery of the finished index.
I have prepared a sample Project Cost Estimate Form that I use in
preparing cost estimates. It can be viewed, copied or printed by

A sample of the Indexing Agreement I like to
use can be seen/copied here.
